The Port Robinson, ON office is looking for a knowledgeable, analytical, and detail oriented Welding Engineer to join the Engineering team.


Provides in-house welding engineering expertise to the Company in regard to the application and interpretation of codes, processes and practices affecting welding, fabrication and quality assurance activities.


  • Develops welding techniques, procedures, and selection of welding equipment in regard to problems involving fabrication of metals, utilizing knowledge of production specifications, properties and characteristics of metals and metal alloys, and engineering principles.
  • Conducts research and development to develop and test new fabrication processes and techniques, improve existing, or develop new welding equipment.
  • Develops new or modifies current welding methods, techniques and procedures.
  • Prepares technical reports as a result of research and development and preventative maintenance investigations.
  • Establishes welding procedures to guide production and welding personnel relating to specification restrictions, material processes, pre and post heating requirements which involve use of complex alloys, unusual fabrication methods, welding of critical joints and complex post-heating requirements.
  • Reviews and evaluates data to assist welding engineering personnel in the development and application of new or improved welding techniques, procedures and processes.
  • Evaluates new developments in welding field for possible application to current welding problems or production processes.
  • Directs and coordinates technical personnel in performing inspections to ensure workers' compliance with established welding procedures, restrictions and standards; in testing welds for conformance with code requirements; or testing welding personnel for certification.
  • Networks with Welding Professionals alike to exchange ideas, information or technical advice concerning welding matters.
  • Contacts personnel of other companies, engineering personnel or clients to exchange ideas, information or other technical advice concerning welding matters.
  • May perform experimental welding to evaluate new equipment, techniques and materials.
  • Directs the testing and evaluating of welding equipment.
  • Evaluates data and conducts experiments to develop application of new equipment or improved techniques, procedures or practices.
  • Recommends adoption of new developments and applications to engineering, Q.A. and welding personnel and demonstrates the practicality of recommendations.
  • Makes recommendations based on sound engineering principles, practices and judgment pertaining to specific engineering problems.
  • Supervises the inspection of welded joints and testing to assure welds meet Q.A. standards, code requirements and customer job specifications.
  • May conduct certification tests for qualification of personnel with respect to national code requirements.
  • May participate in customer meetings as Company technical resource.
  • Maintains awareness of engineering, fabrication and construction technological developments, and evolving field practices.
  • Performs in-house training of welding and Q.A./Q.C. personnel.
  • Ensures responsibilities and accountabilities are carried out in a safe manner in accordance with the E.S. Fox Limited Environmental Health and Safety Management System, ISO 45001 standards and OHSA requirements.
  • Duties may expand to include Manufacturing and/or Construction Engineering.
  • Methodically keeps care and custody of ESFL growing number of ESFL WPS' and PQR's in a structured manner, and in a method such that your subordinates can understand and access procedures under your direction.
  • Instrumental in hiring and training subordinates required to perform weld engineering for the company, and potentially some manufacturing and/or construction engineering subordinates.
  • Maintains up to date knowledge and awareness of welding processes, procedures and practices affecting welding practices in the fabrication facility
  • Maintains knowledge of technical code requirements, material specifications and scheduling
  • Ensures compliance with code and contractual obligations
  • Monitors and Ensures Quality


  • Bachelors Degree in Mechanical or Metallurgical Engineering
  • Professional Engineering License (Province of Ontario)
  • Detailed knowledge of Welding and Q.A. Codes and Standards including ASME, CSA, ASTM, API and ANSI Standards and Codes
  • Certification to CSA W47.1/W59/W47.2/W59.2 is an asset
  • Metallurgical background preferred


  • Hands on Welding experience in a fabrication environment preferred
  • 5-10 years of previous experience in a similar role is an asset, but not required
  • Direct involvement in a custom steel metal fabrication and piping environment
  • Experience working within a fabrication environment is preferred
  • Experience in or knowledge of fabricating, welding and finishing


  • Well organized with results orientation

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate well with sales, purchasing and production staff
  • Demonstrated ability to effective deal with customers, vendors and third party manufacturers
  • Detail-oriented with excellent decision-making and problem-solving skills
